Fundraiser Fun Had
Besides being a lot of fun, Peninsula Tennis Club's annual fund raiser, so called the O.B. Wimbledon Garden Party, brought in over $4000 to the club's Improvement Fund (projects: clubhouse front deck; walkway to clubhouse; storage shed). Held on Saturday, June 24th, the event included a mixer, auction, dinner and dance. Fifty-plus participated in the Gretchen Magers/Ed Collins Tennis Mixer, then joined others to enjoy an exhibition doubles match involving Gretchen, former PTC pro Jim Kellogg, former WTA pro Ros Nidefer and 2000 NCAA All-American Allison Bradshaw.
Special thank yous go to Bob Moonswami, for getting the food donated (Bob is the chef at the Atlantis Restaurant on Harbor Island), Lien Shih, Pat Leslie, Jerry Wood and Nina Poanessa for helping prepare the food, and to John Stuemke for barbecuing.

Poachers Dominate
Peninsula Tennis Club fielded two entrants in the USA Adult Spring League in the 3.5 division. One team finished in the middle of the pack and the other, which called themselves the "Poachers," took top honors. Coached by Bob Simmons, the team included Eileen Carrol, Nancy Boesen, Carol Diggs, Terri Haas, Mary Lou Harris, Lori Honeyman, Sharon Keagy, Mary Long, Betty Meek, Wendy Mosley, Kim Rosner, Bambi Schmidt, Sheri Thompson and Dianne Wells.  At the time of this printing, the team was headed to Los Angeles to compete in the Sectionals.

Gretchen Runner-up at Wimbledon 35s
PTC's Gretchen Magers duplicated her 1999 showing at Wimbledon this year, reaching the finals of the women's 35s. Teaming with British legend Virginia Wade, Gretchen lost to Ros Nidefer and Yvonne Vermaak. On the way to the final, Gretchen and Virginia won three close matches: in the semis they bested Anne Hobbs and Betty Stove 9-7 in the third; and in the quarters they defeated Mima Jausovec and Hana Mandlikova 6-4 in the third.
Gretchen has been invited to play in the Mixed 35s at the U.S. Open. Look for the results in the Union-Trib during the second week of play.

O'Campo Nets Pro Penn
The Pro-Penn Menís Singles League recently completed its Spring/Summer schedule and Lou OíCampo took away top honors. Finishing second was Olivier Meis, third was Mark Smith. For information on the fall season see Duncan.

Pointers Finish High
For the third consecutive year, the Point Loma High Boyí Tennis Team finished second in the 2000 San Diego CIF Division II Tennis Championships.
Led by senior Denis Kolenovic (who lost but one singles match all season), the team fell to La Jolla High 11-7 in a well-contested final.
Off the courtin the classroom particularlythe Pointers finished second to none. Overall, the team grade point average was 3.85. Nine players were named to the Union-Tribune All-Academic Team: Alex Hawk, Michael Hinrichs, Denis Kolenovic, James Peairs, Sarjan Patel, Avi Brown, Kevin Flores, Brandon McKay and Alex Ooi. The team was coached by PTC's Duncan Depew.

Gazebo, Etc.
Gazebo in the Works: Mike Hinrichs is putting the final touches on a gazebo that will sit between courts 8 and 9. Mike, the son of PTC's Jim and Susan Hinrichs, is building the wooden structure in part to satisfy requirements to become an Eagle Scout...Welcome New Members:
Recent new members to Peninsula Tennis Club: Tony and Mary Crisafi, Kristin Saaco, Kurt Sherer, Lora Stewart, Ted Fregosso, Jerry Greenstein, Charles Snyder, Mobley Milam, Nancy and Chris Wilkinson, and Bob Denton (renew)...PTC Overwhelms Tierrasanta TC: Led by the undefeated play of Jim Hinrichs and Mike Kuras, Peninsula Tennis club won the inaugural Inter-Club Doubles Challenge with Tierrasanta Tennis Club on April 15. Also contributing were Norm Ytterdal, Bill Hogben, Gary Wonacott, Lou O'Campo, Pat McClure, Karen Rood, and Jack and Carol Mayo.

Hogbenís Not Ageless
Watching him most any weekday afternoon playing doubles, you might not call him spry, but you certainly wouldn't think he'd just celebrated his eightieth birthday either. Youthful in every way, and blessed with undoubtedly the lowest bouncing slice serve at Robb Field, and a forehand that can be hit hard and with such an angle that even the speedy Gig Conaughton has trouble catching up with it, Bill definitely lives up to his reputation as a Robb Field tennis legend.
A couple dozen PTC regulars surprised Bill on May 27th(his birthday is actually June 1st). Led to believe he was participating in a club mixer, Bill was caught off guard when he entered the clubhouse to find it decorated with streamers, balloons and empty boxes wrapped in colorful paper.
